A new interactive light installation by Tine Bech Studio was commissioned for Victory Over the Sun: Encounters with Light at The Light, Durham’s new museum and art gallery.
Switch (After Dan Flavin) transforms an everyday corridor into a space of play, colour and shared experience. A row of familiar light switches controls vertical LED lights across the space, inviting visitors to experiment with colour and create changing compositions together.
Taking inspiration from Dan Flavin’s use of fluorescent light and architectural space — with Flavin’s work also featured in the exhibition — Switch shifts the experience towards participation.
Each flick of a switch changes the space. As more people join in, individual actions overlap to create an ever-changing collective composition of colour and light.
The work continues Tine Bech’s exploration of play as a way of bringing people together. Here, one of our most familiar everyday interfaces becomes an invitation to be curious, interact and connect.
