What can a cloud learn about the future?
We often think of the cloud as somewhere our photographs and data live. But clouds have always carried something else too: our imagination.
Dreaming of You brings these two meanings together. Floating clouds share children’s dreams, stories and reflections about technology, inviting us to pause and consider the future we are creating together.
As the artwork travels, it continues to learn. Each exhibition adds new voices, creating a growing archive of hopes, questions and possibilities for tomorrow.
This cloud learns from tomorrow – learns how children imagine the future. It does not learn from the data of the past.
The children’s reflections are curious, empathetic, humorous and imaginative. They do not always separate technology from nature, emotion or everyday life. Their ideas reveal a future of invention, in which machines are woven into the fabric of life but shaped by relationships, care and a desire to understand the world rather than control it.
A significant part of my artistic practice is concerned with how an artwork invites human behaviour: how it might encourage us to play, connect and discover new parts of ourselves.
As Dreaming of You has evolved, the cloud has also become a space for care and empathy: a place to rest, look upwards, slow down and share imagination.
The artwork is teaching us what happens when people are given permission to wonder together.
Or perhaps the audience is learning how to be with clouds.
