World Gone Pear Shaped tours to Illuminate Adelaide

Tine Bech's giant inflatable sculpture is popular with selfie takers.

See our much-loved pear at Illuminate Adelaide, located at the War Memorial Lawns in Adelaide, Australia. Running for seventeen nights from July 5th to 21st, 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm, City Lights‘ free program invites everyone to participate and showcases works by local and international artists from around the globe.

Artist Tine Bech conceived the concept for World Gone Pear Shaped in early 2022, using NASA’s open-source 3D high-resolution images of planet Earth. With many details of our beautiful planet visible, the work blends science, art, and technology to playfully challenge us to reshape our view of the world.

We welcomed thousands of visitors each night, and ‘The Pear’ proved to be a crowd favourite! Many people couldn’t resist giving it a hug, while others enthusiastically pointed out where Adelaide would be on the pear—capturing the moment with photos!

Illuminate Adelaide acknowledges the Kaurna People of the Adelaide Plains, the Traditional Owners of the lands we live, learn and work on and pay our respects to Elders past and present.

Illuminated Adelaide is curated by Rachael Azzopardi and Lee Cumberlidge.
