Dreaming of You was presented in the Netherlands as part of I Light U, suspended within the vast public concourse of Utrecht Centraal.
Two illuminated clouds floated above the station entrance, moving slowly through changing colours as travellers passed beneath them. Set against the architecture of glass, steel and exposed structural beams, the soft, organic forms created an unexpected interruption within the busy transport space.
This presentation revealed a different side of the artwork. In previous exhibtions Dreaming of You developed as an intimate and immersive environment: a place where children and adults could rest beneath the clouds, listen closely to the soundscape and spend time imagining together. In Utrecht, the work became part of the movement and rhythm of everyday public life.
People encountered the clouds while arriving, leaving, meeting friends or continuing their journeys. Some stopped to look upwards or take photographs, while others caught a brief glimpse as they moved through the station. The work did not ask audiences to enter a separate exhibition space; instead, it appeared within a familiar public setting and gently changed its atmosphere.
The scale of Utrecht Centraal made the clouds feel both small within the architecture and strangely present – like they belonged there. Their shifting pinks, blues and warm reds reflected across the surrounding glass, allowing the installation to expand visually beyond its physical form.
Showing Dreaming of You in this setting became an exploration of how an artwork can create small moments of wonder within places designed for speed, direction and transit. The clouds invited a pause, however brief, and encouraged people to notice something soft, playful and dreamlike above the practical routines of travel.
The Utrecht installation demonstrated how Dreaming of You can adapt to very different environments. In galleries where it creates a shared world that audiences can enter and inhabit. In a large public space, it becomes a passing encounter: a moment of colour, imagination and surprise within the everyday.
Light U Light Festival celebrates national and international light artists across the city. With no fixed route and no entry fee, visitors are free to wander and discover glowing artworks illuminating Utrecht’s streets and waterways.
