Enchanted Exchanges links two public spaces through a shared lighting system and live video feed, transforming them into one connected experience. Originally commissioned for Glow at RHS Garden Bridgewater and Lightwaves at Salford Quays – MediaCity, the artwork invited audiences to co-create a live choreography of colour across both locations.

Visitors at each site controlled interactive light plinths that illuminated different sections of the architecture while simultaneously influencing the lighting at the second location. Through a live webcam feed, audiences could see each other playing in real time, revealing how actions in one place immediately shaped another.

The work explores how light can connect people across physical space, transforming two separate places into a shared, playful landscape. By linking the historic setting of RHS Garden Bridgewater with the contemporary urban environment of MediaCity, Enchanted Exchanges invites new relationships between people, place and public space.

At the heart of the installation is a bespoke communication system developed by Tine Bech Studio. Interactive control plinths send encrypted messages via a central server, allowing synchronised lighting across multiple sites in real time. The system is scalable, transportable and can be adapted to different buildings, landscapes and public spaces.
